PARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique still hopes Kylian Mbappé will stay at the club despite an ongoing transfer standoff, but wouldn’t comment on Neymar’s future as the Brazil forward moves closer to a possible departure.Neither Mbappé nor Neymar took part in PSG’s training session on Friday, parts of which were open to the media. The club said Neymar trained alone indoors away from his teammates because of a viral infection. Mbappé has trained apart from PSG’s first-team regulars all week after making it clear he wants to play out the final season of his contract and leave as a free agent next year. PSG said it wants to sell him now if he will not extend his contract.Enrique was naming his squad later for Saturday’s home game against Lorient, with PSG expected to begin its title defense without Mbappé.The France forward has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, which twice failed with bids to sign him before, but Enrique hopes a solution can be found...

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:14:52 GMT

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — After the Japanese were eliminated early from the Olympics two years ago on home soil, they rebuilt, hiring a new coach and focusing on youth. The result? Japan scored in droves at the Women’s World Cup. Led by coach Futoshi Ikeda, the Nadeshiko racked up 15 goals, most of any team in the tournament. Surprising young midfielder Hinata Miyazawa had five goals to lead the field, matching Japanese legend Homare Sawa’s record set in 2011.But it wasn’t quite enough to hold off Sweden, which knocked Japan out of the tournament with a 2-1 victory in a quarterfinal match on Friday night. Midfielder Jun Endo sat on the field for a long time after the final whistle, sobbing, as Sweden’s players celebrated. “We knew we were going to play a very skilled and technical team,” Sweden’s Kosovare Asllani said. “We didn’t want them to have a lot of time on the ball, because that’s when they’re the best.”Amanda Ilestedt scored a first-half goal and Filippa...

At least 55 people died in fires on Maui. Residents had little warning

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:14:52 GMT

LAHAINA, Hawaii (NEXSTAR) — Hawaii emergency management records show no indication that warning sirens sounded before people ran for their lives from wildfires on Maui that killed at least 55 people and wiped out a historic town. Instead, officials sent alerts to mobile phones, televisions and radio stations — but widespread power and cellular outages may have limited their reach.Hawaii boasts what the state describes as the largest integrated outdoor all-hazard public safety warning system in the world, with about 400 sirens positioned across the island chain to alert people to various natural disasters and other threats. Newest photos show devastation from Maui fire But many of survivors said in interviews Thursday that they didn’t hear any sirens or receive a warning that gave them enough time to prepare, only realizing they were in danger when they saw flames or heard explosions nearby. The wildfires are the state’s deadliest natural disaster since a 1960 tsunami tha...

LONDON — Dozens of migrants have been evacuated from a controversial offshore barge used by Britain as temporary asylum accommodation after deadly bacteria was found in the water supply. The legionella bacteria, which can cause pneumonia-like illnesses, was discovered in the water system on board the Bibby Stockholm vessel, the U.K. Home Office confirmed in a statement. All 39 asylum seekers currently housed on the boat had to be moved out immediately pending further assessment of the risks onboard, the Home Office said. “The health and welfare of individuals on the vessel is our utmost priority,” a spokesperson added. The Home Office was unable to confirm where the migrants are being rehoused. So far there have been no confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease, an illness caused by the bacteria which the National Health Service says kills around 1 in 10 people who contract it.The first migrants were only moved aboard the ship Monday after weeks of delay, with additional saf...

CCC Ready to Take Input on Rewritten Cannabis Industry Rules

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:14:52 GMT

A swath of regulatory changes are coming to Massachusetts’ cannabis industry, including measures to clear the way for people with past criminal records to work in marijuana shops and to allow all cities and towns to eventually host cannabis cafes. In late July, the Cannabis Control Commission unanimously approved draft regulations intended to reflect the cannabis industry reform law former Gov. Charlie Baker signed last summer. The commission has spent the last few months re-writing the regulations that have been in place since legal marijuana sales started in 2018.The changes seek to increase diversity in the field, ramp up oversight on agreements between marijuana businesses and municipalities — a chronic trouble spot for the young industry — and move closer to social pot consumption sites.“We can protect the health and safety of our citizens while reducing … overly cumbersome and costly regulatory burdens, which help more businesses achieve ...

By REBECCA BOONE (Associated Press)Follow live updates about wildfires that have devastated parts of Maui in Hawaii, destroying a historic town and forcing evacuations. The National Weather Service said Hurricane Dora, which passed south of the island chain, was partly to blame for strong winds that initially drove the flames, knocking out power and grounding firefighting helicopters.Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen Jr. surveyed the damage in Lahaina on Thursday and said it doesn’t resemble the place he knew growing up.“The closest thing I think I can compare it to is perhaps a war zone, or maybe a bomb went off,” he told ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Friday. “It was cars in the street, doors open, melted to the ground. Most structures no longer exist. And from blocks and blocks of this.”Bissen, who grew up in Maui, said he was familiar with what Lahaina looked like since his mother worked at a restaurant there, the Pioneer Inn, for ...
